A new rumour has surfaced regarding the next Far Cry game. The well-established series by Ubisoft has seen us be taken to Africa, tropical islands, the Himalayas and even a primal version of Earth. However, it looks like the next iteration is taking a whole new turn. According to a leak, Ubisoft is planning for the next Far Cry game to be a western theme. In addition to one source for that leak a further confirmation comes from a film crew who were spotted at a Church in north-eastern Montana. The crew were according to sources were recording scenes for a video game’s promotional material. The Producer, Jeff Guillot, who was with a filming team of 11 stated that “This is a sequel to an existing global franchise”. The information we have suggests it highly unlikely that this relates to Red Dead Redemption 2.
This differing theme sounds like an awesome idea in concept and direction for Far Cry, but I do have my fears about how they are going to implement it. The rumours hint that the new Far Cry game could be coming in just a couple months or for the Christmas rush during the latter part of fall of this year. The more concerning part of this, however, is it appears Ubisoft are looking to compete with Red Dead Redemption 2, another western themed game, and could be planning to release it the same week.
Ubisoft has tried similar moves in the recent past with games last year being clump released and around the same time as other major titles by other publishers. This resulted has no doubt heavily drowned their titles amongst all the noise and hype of two well established popular franchises and potentially impacted sales. We were hoping Ubisoft had learnt their lesson, but it would appear not.
It seems the publishing giant is keen to compete yet again directly and this time with one of the most anticipated games of 2017. I can understand that developers and publisher want to cash in on trending game topics, but I feel in the event they do go toe to toe Far Cry really will not stand a chance given how anticipated Red Dead Redemption 2 is and the strong reputation its developer has. I can only assume they are banking on sales off the back of people being in a westerns kind of mood and taking a chance on it, but if people are only able to afford one of the two I feel many will opt for Red Dead Redemption 2 over Far Cry. I believe this will be the case especially given that Far Cry Primal, the most recently released in the Far Cry series, was not particularly strong and was subject to some controversy due to its map being a re-skin of the map from Far Cry 4. Whether re-using maps from previous games is a good or practise is a debate for another time but at the time it certainly didn’t help Far Cry Primal’s release.
If Ubisoft does follow through with going head-to-head with Red Dead Redemption 2 or even release it this year in general, we speculate that we are likely to see the next Far Cry revealed officially at this year’s E3 which is in June. Hopefully, we will see it at E3, but for Ubisoft’s sake, I hope they opt for a Christmas release or an early next year release.
When we find out more information about the game, we will, of course, let you know. Have you played previous Far Cry games? Looking forward to a new one? Let us know in the comments below.
